There are so many explanations of what craniosacral therapy is online and in books and they are sometimes very different in the approach they take to explain the therapy. On occasion, I find myself being asked what craniosacral therapy is when I am out and about socially. Answering this question simply doesn’t come easily or to be more precise most people don’t fully get what I am saying to them.! They get that glazed look in their eyes after a while and I tell them they should just try it….which gets a smile or a ‘maybe’ look from them!
It is easy for us to read explanations on the web of craniosacral therapy when we have a few training seminars under our belts and are studying the subject. So I am going to start my explanation as if I was talking to someone in a conversation but more importantly to someone who has never heard of craniosacral therapy before..! Here we go…
“….Craniosacral Therapy will help to reduce your stress level and build your energy. By doing this it supports and encourages your body’s own ability to balance, restore and heal itself….”
“….Practitioners will sense tensions in the body and help to release them in a supported, comfortable way. Craniosacral therapy is a non invasive therapy. You remain fully clothed and the therapist makes a light touch on maybe your feet, your head, shoulders and maybe even your spine or sacrum….”
“…..During or after a session you may feel calm and energised, with increased clarity of mind and a feeling of well-being. People often report a lovely sense of peace in the body, and better, longer and deeper sleep…..”
(If I haven’t lost them by now…lol…and they want more of an explanation I would continue along the following lines of this explanation which is still straightforward but just a little more in depth)
The Craniosacral Therapy practitioner essentially encourages the body to release restrictions that it has been unable to overcome on its own. And rather than deciding how these changes should be made, the therapist follows the body’s response as to how to proceed. Following this gentle approach helps ensure the method is safe and effective. And we don’t look for explanations from the past as to why the restrictions are there.
Your body talks to you every day showing you the stresses it feels – physical aches and pains, acute and chronic disease, emotional upsets, or simply a lack of well-being, poor health and low vitality. Craniosacral therapy can help you correct these stresses through a gentle approach to healing body, mind and spirit.
It helps increase vitality and well-being on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. This extremely gentle therapy uses no manipulation. The therapist listens, via the hands, to what is going on in your body, and in this way both identifies and relieves pains or tensions held in the body. Craniosacral therapy is client-led. Your body will set the pace of work, so you will remain comfortable, in control and able to integrate the changes that occur.
Since it is your body (rather than your mind) that sets the priorities, you may find that the reason you came for treatment is not what changes first. Also, some people find that it can take a few sessions to get used to what they are feeling. For these reasons, you may need to consider having a series of treatments to gain the full benefit of Craniosacral Therapy and its cumulative effects. The Craniosacral therapy approach to healing body, mind and spirit helps increase vitality and well-being on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. The resulting increased sense of well-being can help with many aspects of life from strengthening the immune system to improving interpersonal relationships.
Craniosacral Therapy is so gentle that it is safe and suitable for people of all ages, from newborn babies to the elderly, and also in acutely painful conditions. Indeed, it is often appropriate when other therapies may be unsafe, such as during pregnancy, after an operation, accident, fall or injury. As a whole body therapy, Craniosacral Therapy may aid people with almost any condition, by raising the vitality and enabling the body’s own self-healing process. But you don’t have to be ill or have any particular symptoms to benefit from Craniosacral Therapy. The alleviation of life’s stresses, and the increased sense of vitality and well-being that Craniosacral Therapy can bring are welcome to most of us at any time.
On a physical level, craniosacral therapy influences the central nervous system- the brain and spinal column- as well, as the fluid that bathes it. The cerebral spinal fluid bathes and cushions the brain and spinal cord, and it moves in a subtle tide-like motion. This movement is so subtle that it is barely measurable with instruments, but the hands of a trained therapist are able to perceive it clearly. Restrictions or congestion cased by tension, trauma or illness-physical or emotional- will show up in this subtle motion.
On an emotional level, craniosacral therapy can effect profound changes with regard to deeply held patterns. Our bodies are remarkable machines, and will always tend towards health if afforded the opportunity. A craniosacral treatment offers a gentle, safe, non-invasive space in which to facilitate this transformation.
Craniosacral therapy is on the cutting edge of energy medicine.
